Exercise training in heart failure: from theory to practice. A consensus document of the Heart Failure Association and the European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation

Abstract: The European Society of Cardiology heart failure guidelines firmly recommend regular physical activity and structured exercise training (ET), but this recommendation is still poorly implemented in daily clinical practice outside specialized centres and in the real world of heart failure clinics. In reality, exercise intolerance can be successfully tackled by applying ET. We need to encourage the mindset that breathlessness may be evidence of signalling between the periphery and central haemodynamic performance… Show more

“…The conduction of cardiopulmonary exercise tests and physical exercise training are considered safe in patients with chronic HF and are recommended in the guidelines (33)(34)(35)(36). Currently, only few studies exist which address this issue with reference to LVAD patients (13,37).…”

“…In addition to continuous moderate‐intensity aerobic training, and also high‐intensity and low‐intensity interval training models, respiratory training and strength training demonstrated efficacy in this setting. The key components of the ESC position paper were written in 2011 to strongly advise standardization of exercise prescription 53. In a recent issue in Heart Failure Clinics ,54, 55, 56, 57 the rehabilitation practice patterns performed all over the world are widely reported.…”

“…The advent of pharmacologic management promises improved left ventricular diastolic function2 and a reduced rate of hospitalization in HFpEF patients 3. Regular physical activity and structured exercise training (ET) are a cornerstone of non‐pharmacological management in HF patients 4, 5. ET was found to be effective in improving cardiorespiratory fitness6, 7 and dimensions of quality of life in patients with HFpEF 8.…”
