Exercises for mechanical neck disorders

Abstract: No high quality evidence was found, indicating that there is still uncertainty about the effectiveness of exercise for neck pain. Using specific strengthening exercises as a part of routine practice for chronic neck pain, cervicogenic headache and radiculopathy may be beneficial. Research showed the use of strengthening and endurance exercises for the cervico-scapulothoracic and shoulder may be beneficial in reducing pain and improving function. However, when only stretching exercises were used no beneficial e… Show more

“…The effect was similar after applying only stretching and stretching combined with muscle strengthening, 27 even though it is usually more effective to apply stretching with strengthening, a phenomenon revealed by researchers from Cochrane in 2015. 28 Patients suffering from low back pain (LBP) may also be significantly relieved after stretching. The result is comparable to the effectiveness of yoga and concerns 51% of the individuals subject to observation over 26 weeks, in whom the mitigation of symptoms was significant or complete.…”

“…Some evidence suggests that exercise may be beneficial for neck pain. 5 Studies supporting conservative management of neck pain with upper extremity radiation are even sparser, and randomized controlled trials are needed to examine the clinical effectiveness of conservative treatments. 6 One conservative treatment approach is called directional preference therapy.…”

“…There is moderate quality evidence that strengthening and endurance exercises for cervical-and shoulder muscles are of value to reduce pain and disability in idiopathic neck pain (65). Despite reported altered neck muscle pattern and muscle morphology changes in persistent WAD (20,21,29,66,67) and the advantage of biopsychosocial approaches in the management of persistent pain (52), randomized controlled trails (RCT) examining exercise or behavioral approaches have reported no or only modest improvement.…”

“…For extensor muscles, training was performed during active cervical flexion and extension where the load of the head may provoke pain from facet joints. Current evidence for idiopathic mechanical neck pain indicates strengthening and endurance neck exercises (65). An exercise regimen including endurance exercise for deep flexor and dorsal rotatores muscles was effective to reduce the prevalence of neck pain in air force helicopter pilots (77).…”
