Exopolysaccharides from Lactobacillus rhamnosus RW-9595M stimulate TNF, IL-6 and IL-12 in human and mouse cultured immunocompetent cells, and IFN-$\gamma$ in mouse splenocytes

Abstract: International audienceExopolysaccharides (EPS) from Lactobacillus rhamnosus RW- 9595M have been prepared from bacterial cultures, isolated, concentrated, fractionated and tested in vitro for their possible modulating properties on mouse splenocytes from the C57Bl/6 and BALB/c strains, on the murine RAW 264.7 macrophage-like cell line and on human Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMC) from a total of 14 healthy donors. A first step of EPS fractionation was attempted, using membranes with different molecular… Show more

“…(Behare et al 2009a(Behare et al , b, 2010. Besides acting as biothickening agents, some EPS produced by LAB have showed beneficial effects on human health (Chabot et al 2001). Production of EPS varies from strain to strain and depends on various factors like composition of the medium, age of the cell, pH and temperature (De Vuyst et al 2003; Ruas-Madiedo and de los Reyes-Gavilan 2005).…”

“…EPSs produced by LAB have received increasing attention mainly because of their health benefits. Immune stimulation, antimutagenicity, and antitumor activity of fermented dairy products prepared with EPS-producing LAB or EPSs themselves have been investigated (Chabot et al, 2001;Kitazawa et al, 1998;Sreekmar and Hosono, 1998;Tsuda et al, 2008b). However, studies of applications using EPSs produced by LAB as prebiotics are limited.…”

“…29 It has also been analyzed that not only these EPS used in the food industry, but they have also been reported to possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory activities. 31 In recent years, the current research in the antioxidant properties of LAB has been hypothesized on the basis that LAB strains and their metabolic products not only reduce the risk of ROS accumulation through food ingestion but also degrade superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide. Recently Kishk et al 20 also focused on antioxidant extracellular polysaccharides with potential applications in the food industry.…”
