Expanding the Burkholderia pseudomallei Complex with the Addition of Two Novel Species: Burkholderia mayonis sp. nov. and Burkholderia savannae sp. nov.

Abstract: Distinct Burkholderia strains were isolated from soil samples collected in tropical northern Australia (Northern Territory and the Torres Strait Islands, Queensland). Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA and whole genome sequences revealed these strains were distinct from previously described Burkholderia species and assigned them to two novel clades within the B. pseudomallei complex (Bpc). Because average nucleotide identity and digital DNA… Show more

“…The B. pseudomallei group is of worldwide importance because the species B. pseudomallei and Burkholderia mallei cause the mortal (if not treated) melioidosis diseases in humans and animals, and glanders, specifically in equines, respectively [ 6 , 7 ]. Recently, “ Burkholderia mayonis ” and “ Burkholderia savannae ” were described within the B. pseudomallei group [ 8 ]. Although some species from the Bcc are plant pathogens, there is a small group where Burkholderia plantarii , Burkholderia gladioli , and Burkholderia glumae are included; however, they are not part of the Bcc.…”

“…These contradictory results observed between the syrbactin mutants may be the result of the different genetic background of the strains used in these studies and/or the experimental parameters that were utilized. (42,47). This expansion will increase our ability to further resolve the function and association of specific BGCs with organisms that inhabit different niches.…”

“…Second, we used a chromogenic medium originally developed for the detection of B. cepacia in clinical samples as green colonies. melioidosis in French Guiana, the final health status of these equids remains uncertain given the chronic potential of these two diseases [43][44][45].…”

“…Overall, the variability in test results among animals in farm #24 may indicate different exposure and/or infection dynamics and/or test characteristics. Despite the absence of previously reported cases of glanders or melioidosis in French Guiana, the final health status of these equids remains uncertain given the chronic potential of these two diseases [43–45].…”
