Expansion of multi-word terms for indexing and retrieval using morphology and syntax

Abstract: A system for the automatic production of controlled index terms is presented using linguistically-motivated techniques. This includes a finite-state part of speech tagger, a derivational morphological processor for analysis and generation, and a unificationbased shallow-level parser using transformational rules over syntactic patterns. The contribution of this research is the successful combination of parsing over a seed term list coupled with derivational morphology to achieve greater coverage of multi-word t… Show more

“…In [3,5,12] we can observe some examples of the first category, in which the language is modelled as a stochastic process, estimating the probabilities of the language model by means of a reference corpus. In [6,1,4] we can see examples of research works using approaches that can be classified into the second category. They study the internal structure of the phraseological unit and the relationship among its components.…”

“…En [15], la indexación y recuperación de unidades fraseológicas se realiza mediante la combinación de la sintaxis y la morfosintaxis. Esencialmente lo que el sistema hace es tomar como entrada una lista de términos (unidades fraseológicas) y un corpus.…”

“…In addition, dependency parsing has been used for a number of languages, including English [31,32], French [33] and Czech [34]. Furthermore, a relatively larger amount of work has been devoted to collocation extraction based on shallow parsing, e.g., for English [35], German [36], French [11,37,38] and, notably, in the Sketch Engine multilingual system [39].…”

“…Apart from the underlying preprocessing technology and the specific association measures used to rank candidates, the extraction systems also vary greatly in the range of the syntactic configurations they take into account. Some systems identify candidates of a single type or a few specific syntactic types, e.g., verb-preposition [29], preposition-noun-preposition, prepositional phrase-verb [27], verb-object, noun-adjective, verb-adverb [26] or noun phrases [11,37,38]. Yet, other systems aim at a broader coverage, e.g., [25,39].…”
