Experience and applications of phasor measurements to the Brazilian interconnected power system

Abstract: SUMMARYIn this paper, applications of phasor measurements to the Brazilian interconnected power system (BIPS) are presented. Two prototypes, the low voltage phasor measurement system (LVPMS), with phasor measurement units (PMUs) installed in nine universities throughout Brazil and the high voltage phasor measurement system (HVPMS), with PMUs installed in four substations in a transmission utility in Southern Brazil, are the first installations in the country. These experimental prototypes have been a rich sour… Show more

“…A possible explanation is that they may be considered too sensitive to share with the public domains. To the author's best knowledge, the only empirical results available on this topic are from Chao et al [3], Cyr and Kamwa [14], and Decker et al [15]. However, the primary contributions of these studies were not reporting empirical data.…”

“…The Decker et al paper [6] describes two synchrophasor systems installed in Brazil: a low-voltage phasor measurement system (LVPMS) with PMUs installed in nine universities throughout Brazil, and a high-voltage phasor measurement system (HVPMS) with PMUs installed at four 525 kV substations in Southern Brazil. These experimental prototypes have been a rich source of experience on the use of synchronized phasor measurements, including applications such as line parameter estimation, detection of oscillation modes, disturbance analysis, and system wide model validation.…”

“…Alternatively, in the application of PMU data communication, connectionless protocols, e.g., User Datagram Protocol (UDP), is commonly complemented by data recovery scheme implemented at different network layers [9]. The probabilities of the PMU data packet losses observed in the real-life power utility IP networks are less than 0.01% [5,29]. Therefore, they are neglectable comparing to the volume of PMU packets discarded by the PDC.…”
