Experience-Dependent c-Fos Expression in the Mediodorsal Thalamus Varies With Chemosensory Modality

Abstract: The mediodorsal thalamus is a higher order thalamic nucleus critical for many cognitive behaviors. Defined by its reciprocal connections with the prefrontal cortex, the mediodorsal thalamus receives strong projections from chemosensory cortical areas for taste and smell, gustatory cortex and piriform cortex. Recent studies indicate the mediodorsal thalamus is involved in experience-dependent chemosensory processes, including olfactory attention and discrimination and the hedonic perception of odor-taste mixtur… Show more

“…The activation of c-Fos in Pa2 neurons after the behavioral training was not directly linked to associative learning (Fig. 4 G , H ), consistent with studies conducted in mice and other vertebrates (Herdegen and Leah, 1998; Kovacs, 1998; Kaczmarek et al, 1999; Burnham et al, 2010; Lopez et al, 2018; Fredericksen et al, 2019; Möser et al, 2019). Intriguingly, a group of serotoninergic neurons located in PdG showed greater c-Fos upregulation after paired CS and US presentation compared to unpaired ones (Fig.…”

“…Work in nonhuman primates shows that it projects to the posterior orbitofrontal cortex, which is a site of convergence for taste and smell information (De Araujo et al, 2003;Small et al, 2004) and is proposed to form a tripartite circuit to convey information about emotional (and presumably physiological) significance to afferent sensory information (Timbie and Barbas, 2015). Accordingly, in rodents c-Fos expression is greater for familiar tastes and taste odor mixtures, suggesting sensitivity to flavor nutrient conditioning and therefore physiological significance (Fredericksen et al, 2019).…”
