Experience with EPICS in a wide variety of applications

Abstract: Currently more than 70 organizations have obtained permission to use EPICS, a set of software packages for building real-time control systems. In this paper representatives from four of these sites discuss the reasons their sites chose EPICS, provide a brief discussion of their control system development, and discuss additional control system tools obtained elsewhere or developed locally.

“…This open source toolkit was initially developed for the control system of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) in the Argonne National Laboratory in collaboration with the Los Alamos National Laboratory, [1], and is a software framework specifically designed for the development and implementation of distributed control systems for scientific facilities, [2]. In particular, it is useful for the connection of large number of controllers in a networked environment and gives monitorization, supervision and control utilities, including feedback actions and guaranteeing soft realtime behavior.…”

“…Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS) middleware is one of the most relevant solutions developed for the implementation of the control solutions in this class of facilities and, in particular, it is very usual as main control technology in particle accelerators. This open source toolkit was initially developed for the control system of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) in the Argonne National Laboratory in collaboration with the Los Alamos National Laboratory, [1], and is a software framework specifically designed for the development and implementation of distributed control J. Jugo, M. Eguiraun systems for scientific facilities, [2]. In particular, it is useful for the connection of large number of controllers in a networked environment and gives monitorization, supervision and control utilities, including feedback actions and guaranteeing soft realtime behavior.…”

“…EPICS is an architecture for developing scalable distributed systems with interesting characteristics from an implementation point of view, such as: open code, documentation, toolkits, etc. It is widely adopted in the scientific community [2,9,10]. The module designed includes a basic Input/Output Controller (IOC), and is based in a 32 bits microcontroller from Freescale's Coldfire family processors running RTEMS operating systems and has USB, RS232, RS485 and CAN interfaces.…”
