Abstract:Fifty patients undergoing laryngectomy are described. The sociological and psychological consequences of the operation for the patient and his relatives are described, and the factors which govern the development of oesophageal speech.
“…Total laryngectomy creates a major communication problem, which can result in disruption of the patient's normal pattern of social interaction [4]. It is for this reason that voice rehabilitation of laryngectomised patients has been the focus of research.…”
In Indian scenario where illitracy amongst the patients hinders in maintainence of Blom-Singer® prosthesis, Provox® indwelling value is an appropriate choice for voice rehabilitation.

In Indian scenario where illitracy amongst the patients hinders in maintainence of Blom-Singer® prosthesis, Provox® indwelling value is an appropriate choice for voice rehabilitation.
“…Such a patient should be offered an alternate means for alaryngeal voicing because of the reasons already mentioned before. A study conducted previously in India did not evaluate the importance of PWT and did not discuss the average size of the prosthesis inserted primarily [16][17][18][19][20]. Perhaps the anterograde method of inserting an indwelling voice prosthesis after measuring the PWT with a sizer will yield a better outcome rather than blindly fitting the prosthesis at the time of laryngectomy [2,5,6].…”
The study shows that Indian patients with a thin party wall require a smaller prosthesis size and it is advisable to measure the PWT intra-operatively. Tracheo-oesophageal PWT in laryngectomised patients in India: implications for surgical voice restoration.
