Experiences of the first 493 unrelated marrow donors in the National Marrow Donor Program

Abstract: More than 410,000 people participated in the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) as of October 1, 1991, and more than 850 volunteers had donated marrow. While the incidence of serious morbidity as a result of bone marrow donation is rare, the incidence of lesser complications and the long-term consequences of marrow donation are not known. To determine the incidence of donor complications and measure the recovery time of volunteer, unrelated marrow donors, we analyzed the results of surveys of the first 493 p… Show more

“…This donation modality appears to have several appealing features, such as: the avoidance of general anaesthesia, surgery (marrow harvesting), the risk of autologous or allogeneic blood transfusions, as well as the potential to make the donation process more donor-friendly and convenient. At the present time, it is important to ascertain how this donation approach compares to the time-honoured and established marrow harvesting, a procedure with a remarkable safety record over the past 30 years 30 .…”

“…In countries where consanguinity is very common with a large family size, a much higher proportion of HLA compatible related stem cell donors are available (Ghosh, 1999). In western countries the challenge of nonavailability of HLA identical sibling stem cell donor has been partially met with various bone marrow registries (Stroncek et al, 1993). However, these registries are heavily biased towards the Caucasian population and are not helpful when an Indian patient needs unrelated donor for life threatening haematological conditions.…”

“…One donor continued to report limited activities on day 21. In comparison, it takes marrow donors a median of 14 days to recover from their donation (Stroncek et al, 1993).…”
