“…Autoimmune diseases can be produced in chickens, as they are in mammals, by experimental immunization with the appropriate antigen. For example, immunization with myelin basic protein plus complete Freund's adjuvant produces autoimmune encephalomyelitis in chickens, whereas immunization with thyroglobulin plus the same adjuvant produces autoimmune thyroiditis comparable in appearance to that induced by similar immunization of mice or rats (Jankovic and Isvaneski, 1963;Jankovic et al, 1965). The largest quantity of research, however, has utilized spontaneous models of autoimmune disease in the chicken.…”

“…Neonatal thymectomy has also been reported\to reduce the frequency of experimentally induced LT in the guinea pig 18 and White Leghorn chicken. 19 In contrast to these observations, neonatal thymectomy in the Obese strain chicken increased 20 and neonatal bursectomy decreased 21 the severity of spontaneous thyroiditis while treatment with antilymphocyte serum had no effect on the severity of the thyroiditis. 22 In the outbred Wistar rat, T-cell depleted produced by thymectomy shortly after weaning followed by whole body irradiation resulted in the occurrence of LT and serum antithyroglobulin antibodies in approximately 60% of treated rats.…”

“…108,109 In 1968, Lupulescu and co-workers 110 produced lymphocytic and plasma cell infiltration and atrophy of the parathyroid glands and adrenal cortex in dogs immunized with extracts of allogeneic parathyroid tissue. In 1974, passive immunization of rats with antiserum against their parathyroid tissue caused a marked immunoparathyroiditis, but without hypoparathyroidism.…”
