The present work aims to demonstrate the effect of multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) on mechanical behavior and damage of woven carbon fiber/epoxy composites through experimental characterizations and multi-scale modeling. Tensile tests were conducted for MWCNT/epoxy nanocomposites, and carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced laminated open hole composites with different MWCNT weight ratios. The tensile modulus in CNT/epoxy nanocomposite was enhanced by 15.0%, 37.86%, and 22.86% for MWCNT reinforcement of 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% wt, respectively. The corresponding improvement of tensile modulus for woven composites was 3.45%, 10.25%, and 1.53%; whereas tensile strength was increased by 19.76%, 25.78%, and 6.70%. The enhancement of tensile modulus and strength was less for 1.5% wt MWCNT laminates due to the formation of MWCNT agglomeration. The effective elastic isotropic/orthotropic properties for nanocomposite/woven composite were estimated through Mori-Tanaka approach and numerical homogenization. The finite element simulations were performed with Hashin's damage model and extended finite element method-based crack growth study. The delaminations between layers have been demonstrated through cohesive zone modeling. Damage propagation, interface delamination, and fiber/ matrix failure were demonstrated by numerical simulations in line with scanning electron microscope observations.

The innate structural and functional properties of bacterial cellulose (BC) have been greatly improved by developing its composites with other materials for its applications in different fields. In the present study, BC-Aloe vera (BCA) gel composite with high tensile strength was ex situ developed and characterized for its potential applications in environmental and medical fields. FE-SEM micrographs showed the impregnation of Aloe vera gel into the fibril network of BC. The dry weight analysis showed the addition of 40 wt.% Aloe vera contents into the BC matrix. The addition of Aloe vera resulted in a 3-fold increase in the mechanical strength of BCA composite. The critical strain or stress concentration points were accurately identified in the composite using a three-dimensional digital image correlation (3D-DIC) system. The BCA composite retained water for an extended period of up to 70 h. The BCA composite effectively adsorbed Cu, Co, Fe, and Zn metals. Moreover, the BCA composite supported the adhesion and proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells. The findings of this study suggest that the developed BCA composite could find multipurpose applications in different fields.

Bismaleimide resin (BMPN) matrix composites are widely used in aircraft load-bearing components. Their damage assessment and repair schemes after impact are always the important issues in the researches of civil aircraft composite. In order to better understand their failure behaviors, especially after the cementing repair of the composite laminates, a three-dimensional finite element model of the BMPN matrix composite was established. The constitutive models of 3D Hashin criterion and B-K criterion were implemented through ABAQUS subroutine-USDFLD to simulate the damage behavior of composite laminates and adhesive layers respectively. Through the simulation the influences of the layer setting of the patch and the layer property on the strength recovery after the repair process were compared and discussed. The results show that the failure mode of the parent laminate highly depends on the fiber angle, and the recovery effect of the repaired composite laminates can be highly improved by adding additional layers with the increasing adhesive layer strength.
