Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Oil Recovery from Bakken Formation by Miscible CO2 Injection

Abstract: Unconventional liquid reservoirs are characterized by small matrix permeability that is several orders of magnitude lower than conventional oil reservoirs. The combination of multi-stage hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling has improved the overall profitability of these tight-oil reservoirs by enhancing the wellbore - matrix connectivity. Under primary production, however, the recovery factor remains in the range of only 5% to 10% of original oil in place (OOIP). Considering such a large resource base… Show more

“…CO2 typically dissolves in shale oil, swelling it up and reducing its viscosity. Also, compared to other gases such as N2 and CH4, CO2 has a lower miscibility pressure with shale oil (Zhang et al, 2016). Due to these, and other reasons, CO2 has been a big focus of research.…”

“…CO2 dissolves in shale oil easily, swells the oil and lowers its viscosity. CO2 has a lower miscibility pressure with shale oil rather than other gases such as N2 and CH4 36 . However, the minimum miscible pressure of CO2 in shale oils has a debatable range 2500-3300 psi.…”
