Experimental and Numerical Investigation of the Anti-Overturning Theory of Single-Column Pier Bridges

Abstract: In recent years, overturning accidents at single-pier bridges have occurred frequently, resulting in significant property losses and safety accidents. Overturning accidents show that there are still many hidden dangers in the design, operation, and management of existing single-pier bridges. Therefore, this paper takes the K503 + 647.4 separated overpass of the Hegang–Dalian Expressway as the research object and carries out an onsite anti-overturning stability test of a single-column pier bridge. Through loadi… Show more

“…Compared to double-column pier bridges, single-column pier bridges generally have poor anti-overturning capacity due to their single-support structural form in the transverse direction [ 4 , 5 ]. Over the past decade, several instances of an overloaded-induced overturning of the single-column pier bridge have occurred worldwide, particularly in China, resulting in significant casualties and economic losses [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ]. Bridge overturning accidents are primarily caused by overloaded vehicles [ 5 ].…”
