Experimental and numerical study of laser-assisted machining of Ti6Al4V titanium alloy

Abstract: is an open access repository that collects the work of Arts et Métiers ParisTech researchers and makes it freely available over the web where possible. Laser-assisted machining combines several experimental parameters such as cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut, laser power and distance between tool rake face and the laser beam axis. The optimization of these parameters is necessary to ensure the efficiency of assistance and to increase productivity. This paper focuses on the understanding of the physical p… Show more

“…Especially, Rice and Tracey's expression became very popular in the fracture application and various researchers extended or modified the model to study the damage evolution. Johnson and Cook [28] extended this expression by considering separately the strain rate sensitivity and temperature dependency, which allowed a broad application of this model in a wide array of thermomechanical processes [5,8] . However, the work of Wierzbicki et al [29] proved that the approximation of the failure strain with a monotonically decreasing function of stress triaxiality is poor, while a strong dependency to the third stress invariant is to be preferred.…”

“…The modeling of laser assistance occupies a dominant part of the research in the field of numerical simulation of machining assistance [18,29,5,10,11,9,33]. There is also almost a total lack of work concerning the modeling cryogenic and highpressure water-jet assistance.…”

“…LAµMill has generally shown larger R a at t c of 0.070 mm. Heating process in LAµMill has caused the workpiece became more ductile [5,6] and produced curly chips with inconsistence size and shape. This chips has higher tendency to stick on the cutting surface by rubbing and ploughing mechanisms.…”

“…The workpiece properties are temporarily modified, allowing the milling process done under lower mechanical and thermal load. The machining process managed to be done under lower cutting force and cutting temperature [5,6], thus improve machining surface quality and tool life.…”
