Experimental and Numerical Verification of the Core-Flow in a New Low-Pressure Turbine

Abstract: The flow field in modern axial turbines is non-trivial and highly unsteady due to secondary flow and blade row interaction. In recent years, existing design-tools like two-dimensional flow solvers as well as fully three-dimensional CFD methods have been validated for the assumption of a quasi-steady flow field. Since the inevitable unsteadiness of the flow field has a direct impact on unsteady loss generation and work transfer, existing design methods stand in need of validation for local unsteady effects with… Show more

“…A rotating disc, driven by an electric motor, serves as labyrinth seal carrier without blades. The pre-swirl of the flow and the rotational speed of the disc in combination result in flow kinematics similar to those in the turbine test rig (Henke et al, 2016). In both rigs, the cavity geometry is identical, the pressure ratio across the labyrinth seal is the same and, thus, the leakage mass flow may be expected to be equal, and the rotational speeds are the same.…”

“…The isolated turbine configuration has been the subject of several studies, e.g., Henke et al (2016) and Oettinger et al (2019b), where both the geometrical parameters and aerodynamic characteristics are described in detail, of which a summary is given in Tab. 1.…”

“…Extensive time-averaged and time-accurate measurements were conducted within the turbine itself, see Henke et al (2016) and Oettinger et al (2019a). Six Struts at the turbine inlet feature total pressure instrumentation (kiel-head probes) and thermocouples at the leading edge with six radial positions each.…”

“…The general flow field of the present 1.5-stage turbine configuration was investigated previously by Henke et al (2016) and Biester et al (2013). A primary goal of this turbine design was to ensure a homogeneous flow field in the mid-span unaffected by the end-walls.…”
