Experimental and theoretical studies of 2‐amino thiazole as an inhibitor for carbon steel corrosion in hydrochloric acid

Abstract: The corrosion inhibition of 2‐amino thiazole (AT) for 45# steel in 0.1 M HCl solution was studied by means of weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methods. Quantum chemical calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) method were performed on AT. The results showed that the corrosion inhibition efficiency of 2‐amino thiazole was excellent, and its corrosion inhibition efficiency could reach 90.34% at 500 mg/… Show more

“…At potentials higher than −0.4 V versus Ag/AgCl, the change of slope of the anodic curve and the increase of anodic current density are observed. This behavior was already reported for iron and can be explained by desorption of adsorbed inhibitor molecules and the decrease of the degree of coverage of the electrode surface with increasing anodic potential . Desorption from the metal surface upon anode polarization is typical for many organic compounds, including imidazolines .…”

“…The structural parameters can be obtained from the quantum chemical studies. The stable conformation of the structure in the ground sate and the nature of the molecular orbitals will give valuable information of the inhibition effect of the inhibitor . Quantum chemical studies are correlated with the experimental results with respect to the corrosion inhibition.…”
