The main contribution of this study is to present a modified V-corrugated grooved absorber plate in the construction of plane solar air heaters for higher performance. The combined effects of extended heat transfer area due to the V-shaped absorber, the suction process by the grooves that maintains the convective flow closed to the heated absorber and the jet impingement enable high efficiency of the proposed solar collector. For simulation purposes, the conduction equation is employed for temperature computations inside the solid elements, while the turbulent airflow equations are solved based on the CFD method using the ÎºÎµâˆ’ turbulence model. The present finite element-based analysis is performed using the COMSOL Multi-physic software. To demonstrate the rate of irreversibilities in a solar collector, the entropy generation due to heat transfer and viscous friction and, accordingly, the second law efficiency are computed at different steady operating conditions. The numerical procedure is validated by comparing the obtained numerical findings with the experimental results reported in the literature. From the obtained results, it is found that the proposed absorber plate has a triple-edged sword positive effect on the solar air heater performance, such that the thermal efficiencies up to 80% are computed. Moreover, about 10% improvement in the thermal efficiency of the proposed solar collector compared with its competitor (solar air heater with a simple V-corrugated absorber) reveals the positive impact of the designed absorber plate. Also, the increase in the height of V-shaped absorber from ð»ð»0=2 ð‘ð‘ð‘ð‘ ð‘¡ð‘¡ð‘¡ð‘¡ ð»ð»0=4 ð‘ð‘ð‘ð‘ leads to about 11% improvement in the heater thermal efficiency. The numerical findings can be considered as a good reference to find an alternative for efficient solar collectors.

Supply disruptions, uncertainty, and unprecedented price rises of fossil fuels due to the recent pandemic and war have highlighted the importance of using renewable sources to meet energy demands. Solar air collectors (SACs) are major types of solar energy systems that can be utilized for space and water heating, drying, and thermal energy storage. Although there is sufficient documentation on the thermal analyses of SACs, no comprehensive reviews of the exergetic performance or qualitative insight on heat conversion are available. The primary objective of this article is to provide a comprehensive review on the optimum conditions at which the thermal performance of diverse types of solar air collectors is optimized. The effect of operating parameters such as temperature rise, flow rate, geometric parameters, solar radiation, and the Reynolds number on the thermal performance of SACs in terms of thermal hydraulic performance, energy, and exergy efficiencies has been reviewed adaptively. Beyond the operating parameters, a deep investigation is outlined to monitor fluid dynamics using analytical and computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) methodologies in the technology of SACs. In the third phase, thermodynamic irreversibility due to optical losses, thermal losses between absorber and environment, heat losses due to insulation, edge losses, and entropy generation are reported and discussed, which serve as the fundamental tools for optimization purposes.

The paper focuses on energy modelling that involves a concatenated structure of a linear time‐invariant system. A block‐structured (BS) technique was adopted for a nonlinear system identification. Using the superimposition principle, the model mapped the thermodynamic state variables as an indirect function of time to the output function. The available energy and degradation of solar radiation are determined through a black box model. For testing and validation purposes, a solar collector with recirculating air was considered. The basic principle is to establish a relation between state variables and the performance parameters, without invoking the conventional thermodynamic relationship between them. The output of the model was compared with the validation data to ensure whether or not there was any affinity between them. The sigmoidal, wavenet, and polynomial forms of nonlinearity provided a good fit to the experimental dataset. The mean absolute percentage error encountered while estimating the collector efficiency was noticed to vary from −4.85 × 10−03% to 1.22 × 10−03%. Similarly, it falls in the domain of −4.73 × 10−04% to 7.78 × 10−02% for the second law efficiency. The maximum heat loss rate (BS model) obtained across the first and second passages of the solar air collector was 235.41 and 218.19 W at the air mass flow rate of 8.10 g/s, which is congruent to the validation dataset.
