Experimental assessment of obsidian versus chert lanceolate projectile point durability and robusticity: Semi‐static fracture strength and dynamic impact

Abstract: Stone‐tipped weaponry was important for the survival of past peoples, and many functional and non‐functional factors likely influenced their design. Two functional factors that past peoples likely considered in the design of their stone tips are durability (whether or not a stone tip breaks) and robusticity (how much damage is incurred upon breakage). Many factors have been shown experimentally to influence stone tip influence durability and robusticity, including stone raw material. Here, we further explore t… Show more

“…We have previously used a static procedure to assess stone projectile points (e.g. Gala et al, 2022; Sitton et al, 2023; Story et al, 2019; Thomas et al, 2017). Our specific interest here in examining the peak load, work energy, and deflection curves of different target materials led to our use of static testing via an Instron Materials Tester, as opposed to a dynamic shooting setup via a human archer or a Spot‐Hogg Hooter Shooter, both of which we have also previously employed in experimental tests asking different questions and assessing different variables (Bebber et al, 2020; Bebber & Eren, 2018; Eren et al, 2020; Eren, Bebber, et al, 2022; Eren, Mukusha, et al, 2022; Eren, Romans, et al, 2021; Lowe et al, 2019; Maguire et al, 2021; Mika et al, 2020; Werner et al, 2019; Wilson et al, 2021).…”
