Abstract:Besides their use in separation and filtration processes, ion-exchange membranes have been adopted as electroactive polymer actuators in soft robotics and biomedical engineering, due to their unique coupling between electrochemistry and mechanics. Actuation is generated by the asymmetry in cations and anions transport, as one of the two species is bonded to the membrane backbone, whereas the other can move throughout the membrane. Typically, electrodes are plated on the membrane to enable application of an ext… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
