Experimental characterization of composites to support an orthotropic plasticity material model

Abstract: Test procedures for characterizing the orthotropic behavior of a unidirectional composite at room temperature and quasi-static loading conditions are developed and discussed. The resulting data consisting of 12 stress–strain curves and associated material parameters are used in a newly developed material model—an orthotropic elasto-plastic constitutive model that is driven by tabulated stress–strain curves and other material properties that allow for the elastic and inelastic deformation model to be combined w… Show more

“…The verification and validation tests were carried out using a UD T800/F3900 composite. 40 The strength properties of the composite obtained from the experiments 31,33 and used in the failure model are listed in Table 2. It should be noted that T 33 and 13 in Table 2 are not used in the failure model but are used in the discussion of the results.…”

“…43 Mass scaling was not used as the run times were reasonable without mass scaling. In the following sections, the curves labeled Model curve (when the experimental data are used as input to MAT213) or Experiment (when the experimental data are used in the validation tests) are obtained from experiments as either the average value from all the test replicates 31 or as the value from a single test replicate (impact test). The label MAT213 is used to denote the results obtained from computer simulation using the developed material model.…”

“…20 The deformation and damage response of this composite have been extensively simulated using the developed material model in earlier efforts, which are described, along with the various input parameters required for the code, in several references. 2123…”

“…To construct the required failure surfaces (and the modified radius versus angle plots described earlier in this paper), the normal and shear failure stresses measured from the various characterization tests described in earlier studies 2123 were used to construct nominal failure surfaces using the Tsai-Wu failure criteria. These surfaces were then converted into the required radius versus angle plots using the procedures described above.…”
