Experimental comparison of radiographic techniques in the detection of maxillary sinus disease.

Abstract: The radiographic examination of the maxillary sinus is usually accomplished by the Waters' projection. However, some lesions, such as the mucous retention cyst, postoperative maxillary cyst and maxillary sinus carcinoma, as well as some lesions extending into the maxillary sinus, may be shown by panoramic radiography. The present study was conducted to confirm the ability of panoramic radiography in the detection of maxillary sinus disease. The representation of a globular radiopaque mass at different location… Show more

“…E-mail: yoshiko@dpc.agu.ac.jp presence of a globular radio-opaque mass on the posterior wall or floor. 9 However, there are some limitations to the detection of defects in the posterior wall 10 arising from artefacts or superimposition caused by the hard palate and inferior turbinate. 11 Therefore, diagnosis of diseases affecting the maxillary sinus is often difficult, especially for inexperienced observers.…”

“…7,8 In studies involving the MS, these images are frequently used to define the gold standard. 9 However, according to the studies by Pinsky et al 10 The underlined values represent the accordance observed. Ogawa 12 (1975) found that imaging artifacts from the contralateral mandibular ramus in the maxillary sinus also make the detection of sinus changes more difficult.…”

“…However, in a panoramic radiograph, the central ray is approximately parallel to the medial and posterior wall and the other walls are superimposed 15,16. Ohba et al17 reported that the panoramic radiograph was less effective for a lesion on the anterior and medial walls. Heo et al18 found that observers failed to detect lesions limited to the sinus, for example, those on the floor of the maxillary sinus without any apparent bony expansion or those only on the anterior wall when bony expansion was seen.…”
