Experimental determination of fluence correction factors at depths beyond for a Farmer type cylindrical ionization chamber in clinical electron beams

Abstract: Recently, it has been recommended that electron beam calibrations be performed at a new reference depth [Burns et al., Med. Phys. 23, 383 (1996)] given by dref = 0.6R50-0.1 cm, where R50 is the depth of 50% depth dose. In order to calibrate electron beams at dref with a Farmer type cylindrical ionization chamber, the values of the perturbation correction factors Pwall and Pfl at dref are required. Using a parallel plate Holt chamber as a reference chamber, the product PwallPfl has been determined for a 6.1-mm-… Show more

“…This means that the mean electron energy at depth, Ē z , is a good beam quality specifier for P fl . These results demonstrate that, consistent with experimental findings, 15 TG-51's adoption of P fl values at d max with the same mean electron energy for use at d ref is reasonable, although there is a clear discrepancy compared to the values actually used. In Fig.…”

“…͑16͒ and ͑17͒ in TG-51. 2,5,6 The above procedure is for the determination of R 50 only and does not describe a procedure for the determination of the entire central-axis percentage depth-dose curve in water. Otherwise, the percentage depth-ionization curve measured using an ionization chamber can be converted to a percentage depth-dose curve and R 50 obtained from those data.…”

“…For cylindrical chambers, values of P f l are given in the TG-21 protocol as a function of chamber radius and the mean energy at the point of measurement. One assumes that the values at d max in TG-21 still apply for d ref away from d max ͑further measurements to confirm this, such as those by Huq et al 18 are needed͒. For low-energy beams the TG-21 values apply because d ref is still at d max .…”

“…The IAEA Code of Practice also makes this assumption when it uses reference depths away from d max . 2 Huq et al 18 Tables I and II. surements indicate good agreement with the values of P f l used here for cylindrical chambers in electron beams with initial energies from 5 to 20 MeV. 18 It must be emphasized that the procedure outlined here is not as complex as the equations might suggest.…”
