Experimental Implementation of Spectral Multiscale Coverage and Search Algorithms for Autonomous UAVs

Abstract: We discuss the implementation of Spectral Multiscale Coverage (SMC) based multi-vehicle control and coordination for coverage and search missions by autonomous UAVs. The SMC algorithm gives rise to multiscale vehicle trajectories leading to efficient coverage of a given area and thereby making it useful for search algorithms that are robust to sensor errors and terrain uncertainties. We provide a functional summary of the SMC framework and address its practical implementation. The practical feasibility of the … Show more

“…This paper keeps the original methodology proposed by [3], which is the foundation of most literatures on ergodic control, and which has the advantage of providing closed form solutions for many of the commonly used models of dynamical systems (kinematics-based) [4], while providing multi-scale coverage behaviour. To do so, we propose a solution based on a low-rank tensor approximation to overcome the curse of dimensionality.…”

“…Ergodic control, on the other hand, aims to design a control policy for a given autonomous system so that the trajectory evolution of the resulting dynamical system is ergodic for the reference probability distribution. Systems engineered in such a way have already found applications in robotics [2], [4]. The original approach to ergodic control, as proposed in [3], involves spectral analysis of the dynamical system evolution.…”

“…The algorithm that we use here is a new variant of the Spectral Multi-scale Coverage (SMC) algorithm which was proposed in 36 . This algorithm was extended to dynamic environments in 37 (called DSMC) and its practical feasibility was shown in 38 . We give a short introduction to DSMC algorithm and emphasize the alterations and that leads to the algorithm introduced in this paper called modified DSMC (mDSMC).…”
