Experimental Infection in Newborn Mice and Rats by Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) Virus

Abstract: Newborn mice and rats were inoculated intracerebrally (ic) or intraperitoneally (ip) with Hantaan virus (76–118 strain) or HFRS‐related virus (B‐1 strain). The mortality and the influence on the increase of body weight in newborn mice were higher in the groups infected with the 76–118 strain than in the groups infected with the B‐1 strain, while the B‐1 strain was more virulent in rats than the 76–118 strain. Virus isolation from rats inoculated with either strain was attempted 7 and 11 weeks after inoculation… Show more

“…The variation in the clinical features may depend on the pathogenic properties of the different serotypes. As for the pathogenicity to laboratory rodents, the differences in virulence between APodemus and Rattus serotype HFRS viruses have also been reported by Yamanouchi et al (29). In their work, it was shown that Apodemus the pathogenicity to humans differs.…”

“…A number of animal models for the study of HFRS exist [22,23] , but lethal disease could be induced only in newborn and immunodeficient animals [24][25][26] . Thus, we established a model of infection by ic inoculation of suckling mice with HTNV as used before [20] .…”

“…Infection of newborn rodents with hantaviruses was fatal (Tsai et al, 1982;Kurata et al, 1983;Yamanouchi et al, 1984;Kim et al, 1985;Tanishita et al, 1986), but infection of adults with these viruses resulted in prolonged infection without any clinical symptoms Yanagihara et al, 1985a, b). Recently, T cellmediated immunity was suggested to play a crucial role in resistance of mice to HV infection (Nakamura et al, 1985 a, b).…”
