Experimental investigation and analysis of factors influencing delamination and thrust force during drilling of carbon-fibre reinforced polymer composites

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a statistical model for delamination and thrust forcing during drilling of carbon-fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites using response surface methodology (RSM) to determine the input parameters (drill speed, drill diameter and feed rate) that influences the output response (delamination and thrust force) in the machining of CFRP composite using solid carbide drill cutter. Design/methodology/approach Three factors, three levels central composite face centr… Show more

“…Ghabezi et al [ 7 ] carried out an experimental study to characterize the delamination and uncut fiber in the drilling of honeycomb structures. Yasar et al [ 8 ] and Rajkumar et al [ 9 ] also evaluated the influence of cutting parameters on hole quality for carbon/epoxy composites. A common outcome of these studies was the recognition of the superior contribution of feed rate to delamination extension.…”

“…Signalto-noise ratio and ANOVA were used to interpret the results. Rajkumar et al (2017) tried a trial investigation and analysed factors influencing delamination factor and thrust force for drilling of carbon-FRP composites. Kansal et al (2005) tried to correlate the drilling-induced damage with the drilling parameters of unidirectional GFRP composite laminates.…”

“…The result was that the developed model can be effectively used to predict the thrust force in drilling of GFRP composites within the factors and their limits of the study. Rajkumar et al [9] used RSM to predict the input factors influencing the delamination and thrust force on drilled surfaces of carbon-fiber reinforced polymer composite at different cutting conditions with the chosen range of 95% confidence intervals. Ankalagi et al [10] used response surface methodology to analyze the machinability and hole quality characteristics in the drilling of SA182 steel with an HSS drill.…”
