Experimental investigation and analytical description of a vibro-impact NES coupled to a single-degree-of-freedom linear oscillator harmonically forced

Abstract: In this paper the dynamics of a system composed of a harmonically forced single-degree-of-freedom linear oscillator coupled to a Vibro-Impact Nonlinear Energy Sink (VI-NES) is experimentally investigated. The mass ratio between the VINES and the primary system is about 1%. Depending on the external force's amplitude and frequency, either a Strongly Modulated Response (SMR) or a constant amplitude response (CAR) is observed. In both cases an irreversible transfer of energy occurs from the linear oscillator towa… Show more

“…The VI-ABH has been introduced and studied in [22]. It relies on a different nonlinear mechanism than that used in the nonlinear vibration absorber, even though some common points with recently studied vibro-impact NES can be traced [38,39,44]. However the VI-ABH does not consider and added oscillator representing a vibration absorber but only external contact points on which the beam will impact.…”

“…In order to realize the needed essential nonlinearity (i.e. without linear term), the idea of using vibro-impacts has been used theoretically and experimentally [27][28][29][30][31]. However, using contact nonlinearity as a mean to transfer energy and damp vibrations of structures with an added acoustic black hole effect, has never been reported, to the authors' knowledge.…”

“…Later, a series of research about the VI nonlinear energy sink (NES) is carried out from an experimental viewpoint [9][10][11][12][13][14][15]. Although these experiments are carried out for different objectives, they have some common characteristics and therefore they are analyzed as a whole.…”
