Experimental Investigation and Performance Analysis of Ceramic Inserts in Laser Assisted Turning of Waspaloy

Abstract: In this paper, the influence of laser assisted turning of hard-to-cut nickel-based superalloy on tool cutting ability was presented. The conducted research involved the machining performance along with tool life of ceramic inserts during turning of heat-resistant alloy under a trade name Waspaloy. The ceramic insert with geometry in accordance with the ISO – RPGX 120700 T01020 were applied during longitudinal turning with laser beam. The investigations has been completed with various cutting conditions such as… Show more

“…While searching for cheap and reliable methods of shaping cogbelt pulleys, the author also considered the possibility of making them use laser processing. The literature on this method is broad and indicates its various applications [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. Unfortunately, with a wheel thickness of 15 mm, the use of the gas laser cutting method is significantly limited due to the occurrence of heating and, consequently, deformation of the workpiece.…”

“…The reinforcing materials are characterized by harder and stiffer features than the matrix. This material belongs to the group which is difficult to machine, like tungsten carbide [5], hardened steel [6], Waspaloy [7] or Inconel 718 [8,9] and therefore machining is much more difficult in comparison with conventional materials like steel [10]. However, due to hard ceramic reinforcing components in MMC, they are difficult to machine using conventional manufacturing processes due to heavy tool wear.…”

“…Metal composites are increasingly replacing traditional construction materials used in aviation and in the construction of machinery and equipment. This is due to the ability to obtain virtually any desirable functional properties using a composite material, such as a high damping factor, high resistance to abrasion, high Young's modulus, low specific weight, and low coefficient of thermal expansion which was generally widely described in classic books [1,2], and detailed issues in conference papers, earlier [3,4] and recently [5][6][7][8].…”
