Experimental investigation of a spherical rubber isolator for use in low income countries

Abstract: This paper presents an experimental study of a low-cost seismic isolator that can be used for the protection of low-rise houses in low-income countries. The isolator is based on rolling of a rubber sphere on flat or spherical concrete surfaces. Using a closely spaced grid of such spheres may allow for avoiding of the diaphragm slab at the isolation level, or of reducing its thickness. Avoiding the cost of this extra slab is crucial for building seismically isolated low-rise dwellings economically feasible in l… Show more

“…Huang D D et al study finite element numerical prediction method for dynamic stiffness of rubber isolators. However, most traditional rubber isolator can only provide unidirectional vibration damping characteristics or can't provide coordinated frequency range for vibration control in three directions [4][5][6][7].…”

“…The vast majority of them uses steel bearings rolling on steel surfaces; hence, they may be too expensive to apply in low-income countries. Aiming at increased energy dissipation and avoidance of failure at the contact areas (Foti 2019 ; Foti and Kelly 1996 ; Katsamakas et al 2021a , 2021b , 2022 ; Menga, Bottiglione, and Carbone 2019 ; Menga, Foti, and Carbone 2017 ; Zéhil and Gavin 2013 , 2014 ) have suggested the use of rubber (or, in general, viscoelastic materials) at the contact interfaces.…”

“…Trying to explain this apparent increase in stiffness, Katsamakas et al ( 2021a , 2022 ) tested smaller spheres (100 mm diameter, shore hardness 85A, without a steel core) to displacements of 100 mm. This corresponds to 1 rad of sphere rotation.…”

“…The nature of the mechanisms of rolling friction was further examined in detail by Amontons (1699) and Eldredge and Tabor (1955). Cilsalar and Constantinou (2019) and Katsamakas et al (2022) have investigated the seismic behavior of lightweight structures seismically isolated with a system consisting of high-strength concrete slabs and deformable rolling balls.…”
