Flow-induced vibration (FIV) is concerned in a broad range of engineering applications due to its resultant fatigue damage to structures. Nevertheless, such fluid-structure coupling process continuously extracts the kinetic energy from ambient fluid flow, presenting the conversion potential from the mechanical energy to electricity. As the air and water flows are widely encountered in nature, piezoelectric energy harvesters show the advantages in small-scale utilization and self-powered instruments. This paper briefly reviewed the way of energy collection by piezoelectric energy harvesters and the various measures proposed in the literature, which enhance the structural vibration response and hence improve the energy harvesting efficiency. Methods such as irregularity and alteration of cross-section of bluff body, utilization of wake flow and interference, modification and rearrangement of cantilever beams, and introduction of magnetic force are discussed. Finally, some open questions and suggestions are proposed for the future investigation of such renewable energy harvesting mode.

Vortex-induced vibrations have been recently employed to capture scalable flow energy harvesters, which can attain the maximum power when the wind speed is in the lock-in region where the vortex-shedding frequency is close to the structural frequency. Nevertheless, the dynamical mechanism of the synchronization phenomenon has not been reported. To solve this critical problem, in this paper we explore a novel internal resonance to scavenge flow energy from vortex-induced vibrations, the mechanism of synchronous oscillations is introduced by the amplitude-frequency relationship and confirmed by the energy function. To show the capturing performance, an electromagnetic energy harvester with one-to-one internal resonance is proposed. Based on the harmonic balance method, the electromechanical coupling equations are decoupled, and the first order approximate harmonic responses of displacement and current are established. The modulation equations are derived, the amplitude-frequency curves of displacement and current are plotted with different detuning parameters. The advantage of the proposed one-to-one internal resonance is compared to the noninternal resonance case, the results express that the internal resonance scheme can enhance flow energy capture. The effects of physical parameters on the scavenged power are discussed. The accuracy and efficiency of the approximate analytical results are checked by numerical simulations.

Enhancing Performance of a Piezoelectric Energy Harvester System for Concurrent Flutter and Vortex-Induced Vibration

This paper proposes a novel and efficient energy harvester (EH) system, for capturing simultaneously flutter and vortex-induced vibration. There exists a coupling effect between flexible spring energy harvester (FSEH) and cantilever beam energy harvester (CBEH) in aerodynamic response and output characteristic. Many prototypes of the harvester were manufactured to explore the coupling effect in a wind tunnel. The experimental results demonstrate that FSEH is mainly subjected to flutter-induced vibration and CBEH undergoes vortex-induced vibration. Disturbance of FSEH first takes place, a limited oscillation cycle then occurs, and chaos ultimately happens as airflow velocity increase. Root mean square voltages are more than 11 V for FSEH at beyond 10.52 m/s, which shows the better output performance over the existing harvesters. Vibration response and output voltage of various harvesters are mutually enhanced with each other. An enhancing ratio for FSEH-130-25 is up to 69.6% over FSEH-130-0, while the enhancing ratio for CBEH-130-30 is 198.3% compared to CBEH-0-30. Field application testing manifests that discharging time to power the pedometer is almost twice as long as the charging one for FSEH-130-25 at 14.48 m/s. The current research offers a suggestive guidance for promoting future practical application in micro airfoil aircrafts.
