Experimental investigation of cathode spots and plasma jets behavior subjected to two kinds of axial magnetic field electrodes

Abstract: In this paper, cathode spot plasma jet (CSPJ) rotation and cathode spots behavior subjected to two kinds of large diameter axial magnetic field (AMF) electrode (cup-shaped and coil-shaped) are studied and analyzed based on experiments. The influence of gap distances on the CSPJ rotational behavior is analyzed. Experimental results show that CSPJ rotational phenomena extensively exist in the vacuum interrupters, and CSPJ rotational direction is along the direction of composite magnetic field (mainly the combina… Show more

“…On the other hand, the electron temperature distribution is related to joule heating. Wang et al [38] gave the change of current density of the cup-shaped electrode. In the initial diffusion process, the anode current density is large and the joule heating is strong, which makes the electron temperature rise.…”

“…Several previous papers have dealt with the investigation of the behavior patterns of vacuum arcs on TMF contacts [21][22][23]. The AMF contacts were used in the experiments to study cathode spots and plasma jets behavior [24].…”

“…Therefore, the research on the velocity of cathode spots can be used to study the characteristics of vacuum arc. At present, most studies are focusing on the expansion characteristics of cathode spots in 50 Hz [23][24][25][26][27].…”

“…Besides TMF, axial magnetic field (AMF) is also important for the distribution of cathode spots. Several previous experimental research has dealt with the investigation of the behavior of cathode spot in a axial magnetic field [11][12][13][14]. It was discovered that the AMF constrains radial expansion of cathode spots.…”
