Experimental investigation of column efficiency for two ternary systems in a three‐phase packed distillation column

Abstract: In this work, the effect of vapor load and initial feed concentrations on column efficiency and liquid hold-up in a two-and three-phase packed distillation column at total reflux was investigated. Results for the two investigated mixtures (n-heptane, n-hexane, water) and (ethyl acetate, 1-butanol, water) reveal that column efficiency remains almost constant for the former mixture but changes significantly for the latter. Specific liquid hold-up and water to organic-phase volumetric ratio within the column affe… Show more

“…In 1993, Krishna and Taylor studied the multicomponent distillation columns by modifying the mass transfer coefficients [15]. In 1986, a dynamic simulator called DYCONDIST, programmed by Wong and developed by Carling, was provided to oil investment companies for hydraulic analysis of multicomponent distillation columns [16]. Previous studies, using equilibrium and non-equilibrium methods, conducted in 1999 by Baur et al, were limited to reactive distillation columns [17,18].…”

“…Although there are several methods such as distillation, liquid–liquid extraction, bioleaching, adsorption, and absorption, for the different separation purposes, the most commonly used methods, which are based on physical and chemical principles, to treat oily wastewaters are gravity separation, API unit and skimming, dissolved air flotation, de-emulsion coagulation, and flocculation. The aforementioned conventional approaches indeed cannot give an absolute guarantee in terms of separation efficiency and effluent quality .…”
