Experimental Investigation of Consolidation Properties of Nano-Bentonite Mixed Clayey Soil

Abstract: As a new soil improvement method, adding nano-bentonite can enhance the engineering properties of soil. To study the stabilization effect of nano-bentonite on soil consolidation properties, a series of one-dimensional odometer tests were conducted on a clayey soil with different nano-bentonite mixing contents (i.e., 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2%). The effects of nano-bentonite on the coefficient of consolidation and permeability of the test soil were analyzed. The results show that adding a certain amount of nano-ben… Show more

“…In addition, it should be pointed out that the high ratio of surface to volume exists at the nano scale will cause the nano particles to interact with other soil particles. The number of spaces between clay particles reduces and the size of the voids will be smaller, and the new binding between clay particles relocates the microstructure of the expansive clayey soil (Cheng et al, 2020).…”

“…Soil stabilization is a technique for modifying the properties of soil by mixing and combining new materials [1][2][3][4], In the present day, the growing trend of using waste material in soil stabilization or soil strengthening is operating worldwide. The key reason behind this phenomenon is the excessive production of waste such as marble powder which not only poses hazards but also creates problems with desposal.…”

“…The use of this waste material in the building would ease adverse environmental effects, save energy and money, add economic value to the waste, and reduce total costs [5]. It is generally utilized to stabilize soil for the construction of road pavement [3,4], railways foundations [6], embankments [7], buildings, beneath connect docks, earthen dams, terminals for rail and wagon, an economical base for roadways, building cushions, and reservoir linings, composting facilities and as a mixture material for several purposes in construction work [1,2,8]. The soil is a building material taking on the distinct properties that vary from place to place [6,7].…”

“…The annual monetary loss due to failure of all types of geotechnical structure in all over world is estimated to be several billion US dollar [8][9][10]. In this regard, it will be too significant to ignore the time dependency behavior of clay soil [6,11,12]. Many researchers studied the time-dependent stress-strain behavior of the clayey soil in one-dimensional straining condition as well as triaxial conditions from several decades [13][14][15].…”
