Experimental investigation of dynamic pressure loads during dam break

Abstract: The objectives of this work are to revisit the experimental measurements on dam break flow over a dry horizontal bed and to provide a detailed insight into the dynamics of the dam break wave impacting a vertical wall downstream the dam, with emphasis on the pressure loads. The measured data are statistically analyzed and critically discussed. As a result, an extensive set of data for validation of computational tools is provided.

“…The Froude number (Fr) is widely adopted for characterising the dynamic similarity in channelized granular flows (Chehata et al 2003;Hauksson et al 2007;Choi et al 2014), hydraulics (Armanini et al 2011;Lobovský et al 2014), and geophysical flows (Hübl et al 2009). The Fr macroscopically quantifies the ratio between the inertial and gravitational forces and is expressed as follows:…”

“…Water exchange between the compartments through non-watertight openings in a harmonic motion of the compartment has been studied by Manderbacka et al (2014). The beginning of the flooding resembles a dam-breaking problem which has been widely studied both numerically and experimentally (Lobovský et al, 2014). However, the damaged ship response complicates the problem.…”

“…Normally, the velocity and pressure on the marker are interpolated based on the concept of weighted average of neighboring particles, which is the fundamental equation of SPH as in the Equation (6). However, the portion of the particles within the compact support might be in the wall domain or unoccupied domain…”

“…The experimental test on the investigation of dynamic pressure loads during dam break with an opening gate that was carried out at Technical University of Madrid (UPM) as reported by Lobovsky [6] is used as the reference for simulate purposed and design the analysis model as shown in the schematic diagram (Figure 4). The clear comparison of free surface profile evolution snapshot between the numerical simulation and the experimental at certain times as shown in Figure 5 and the effect of the dam gate removal looks similar at every snapshot on the free surface shape is observed.…”
