The paper deals with an analysis of the shear strength behaviour of coarse-grained materials using large-sized direct shear apparatus. The shear strength curve of compacted coarse-grained material allows for determining the three typical shear strengths, i.e. the shear strength for a maximum density of the sample tested (shear strength at point A), the peak shear strength (shear strength at point P), and the critical shear strength achieved for a large horizontal movement (shear strength at point C). Professional laboratories usually apply for determining the critical shear strength two different methods. The first method considers the critical shear strength at point A and the second method considers the critical shear strength at point C. The aim of the article is not to critically evaluate both methods, but to analyze the results of shear tests of gravels. The results of a large series of tests showed that these stresses may differ from each other in some cases, especially for poorly graded materials. In the case of sandy soil, the shear strength at point A and at point C is equal. However, in the case of poorly graded gravel, the shear strength at point C is greater than the shear strength at point A. The greatest difference between these shear strengths was measured in the case of poorly graded medium gravels. The results showed that the ratio of shear strength at point C to the shear strength at point A increases with increasing the grain size of the material tested. The peak as well as the critical shear strength parameters of poorly graded gravels is better represented by a multi-linear or a nonlinear failure line.

Tanah dapat dibedakan menurut ukuran partikel yaitu : lempung berlumpur, pasir, tanah liat. Tanah liat atau lempung berpasir adalah tanah yang memiliki agregar berbutir halus. Tanah lempung berpasir memiliki keunggulan seperti mudah menyerap air, memiliki permeabilitas yang cukup efektif. Selain itu tanah lempung memiliki kekurangan seperti tanahnya jika dibentuk mudah pecah, didalamnya memiliki nutrisi yang rendah, kurang cocok untuk bercocok tanam. Dalam perencanaan bangunan, tanah mempunyai peran penting karena sebagai kekuatan konstruksi dasar bangunan, seperti pada pembangunan jalan raya, jembatan, dan banguanan bertingkat. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah agar peneliti mampu mengetahui seberapa kuat dan stabilnya suatu tanah tersebut sebelum mendirikan sebuah bangunan pada daerah yang sudah ditentukan. Metode yang digunakan adalah kuat geser tanah menggunakan alat Direct Test Shear. Hasil dari penelitian kuat geser tanah yang telah dilakukan, kita didapat memperoleh kohesi sebesar 0,267 kPa dan nilai dari sudut geser sebesar 1,4800, sehingga dari data yang diperoleh bahwa tanah tersebut rawan longsor dan memerlukan perbaikan tanah agar tanah kuat menopang pondasi bangunan.

The factors influencing geogrid–soil interface characteristics are critical design parameters in some geotechnical designs. This study describes pull-out tests performed on gravelly soils commonly encountered in the Xinjiang region and reinforced with two types of geogrids. The factors affecting the geogrid–gravelly soil interface properties are investigated with different experimental loading methods (pull-out velocity, normal stress), geogrid types, and soil particle size distributions and water contents. The ultimate pull-out force increases with the normal stress and pull-out velocity. Furthermore, with increasing coarse particle content and water content, the ultimate pull-out force increases and then decreases sharply. Based on these research results, this paper provides reasonable parameters and recommendations for the design and pull-out testing of reinforced soil in engineering structures. In reinforced soil structure design, the grid depth should be increased appropriately, and the coarse particle content of the overlying soil should be between 30 and 40%. During construction, the gravelly soil should be compacted to the maximum compaction at the optimal water content, and the structure should have a reasonable waterproofing system. According to the calculation results of the interface strength parameters, the uniaxial geogrid–gravelly soil interface has a high cohesive force csg, which should not be ignored in reinforced soil structure design.
