Experimental Investigation of Surge and Stall in a High-Speed Centrifugal Compressor

Abstract: Flow instability, known as surge and stall, limits the stable operating range of compressors. In this paper, a panoramic map of instability evolution across all typical operations is experimentally demonstrated for the first time in a high-speed centrifugal compressor with a maximum speed of 185;000 r∕ min and a corresponding rotation velocity at the impeller outlet of 593 m∕s. Twelve high-response Kulite pressure probes are mounted on the internal surface of the compressor's casing. The experimental results s… Show more

“…These are the fundamental properties of flow instabilities manifesting on the positive slope of the characteristics. With surge, the performance parameters oscillate and form a limit cycle, 4 where the amplitude and frequency are governed by the entire system [ 25 ].

“…The first one is that the instability phenomena are diverse at various operations, as reported by Xinqian and Anxiong. 19 The second one is that the penalty in the maximum flow capacity caused by the orifice increases as the rotational speed increases, as shown in Figure 8. From the quantitative comparison depicted in Table 2, it can be drawn that using an orifice plate at the rear impeller inlet has the potential to extend the stable operating range of dual-entry centrifugal compressor at low rotation speeds meanwhile nearly leaving the stable operating range unchanged at high rotation speeds.…”

“…The influence of the boundary layer can be ignored in the wide diffuser since the inner flow can be regarded as a two-dimensional core flow. Zheng et al 21,22 investigated the instability behavior of a centrifugal compressor with a vaneless diffuser using high-response pressure sensors. They reported that the instability behavior varied at different rotational speeds.…”
