Experimental investigation of the air–fuel charging process in a four-valve supercharged two-stroke cycle GDI engine

Abstract: Fuel consumption standards imposed in several countries for the next years have prompted the development of hybrid passenger cars with ever smaller internal combustion engines. In such powertrain, fuel consumption is as important as engine packaging and power density, so two-stroke engines may be an option due to their higher combustion frequency compared to four-stroke engines. Therefore, the present research investigates the air-fuel charging process of an overhead four-valve direct injection supercharged en… Show more

“…Many of the drawbacks have been improved in modern 2-stroke engines with technology such as adjusting charging timing to decrease the amount of short, circuited gas [7], electronically controlled direct injection, and variable compression ratio to maximize the fuel efficiency of 2-stroke engines [8,9] and to meet the increasingly stringent emission regulation. However, there is still room for improvement.…”

“…The assembly of the injector on the cylinder head, mainly its inclination, is tted considering the reduction of the fuel short-circuit, a good air-fuel homogenization and a minimal fuel impingement on the piston top. Very interesting studies about the importance of the position of the injector can be seen in [18]; [19]; [20].…”

“…Turbocharging and internal combustion engine downsizing are two effective approaches for increasing gasoline engine efficiency. [2][3][4][5][6] The most prominent advantage of the combination of in-cylinder direct injection technology and supercharged downsizing technology is that the direct injection gasoline engine can produce a large torque at low speeds and can maintain a relatively large torque output at a wide range of speeds. A compact strengthened gasoline engine increases the heat load on the cylinder, making it more likely to knock.…”
