Experimental investigation of the compressive strength of hybrid composite sandwich beams with double-corrugated sinusoidal core reinforced by graphene and polyurethane foam

Abstract: In this paper, the effects of some system parameters such as nanographene, core geometry, and polyurethane foam on the compressive strength of composite sandwich beams with double corrugated lattice core subjected to flatwise-compression load are investigated experimentally. The face sheets and core of the sandwich beams are made of 10-layers bidirectional carbon fibers using the vacuum infusion process. According to the results of the flatwise-compression test, it was revealed that some factors, including hei… Show more

“…In the present consideration, the CFRP laminates have been used in which composite laminas have consisted of two-directional carbon fibers (T300/1.78 g cm −3 purchased from Toray Company) and epoxy resin (EPL1012/Eponate515 provided by Shell Chemicals Company) as matrix phase with 14 wt.% of hardener (EPH112). Bending strength, bending modulus, and tensile strength of the resin epoxy EPL1012 is 100, 2750, and 60 MPa, respectively [24]. Tensile strength, tensile modulus, and mass density of the carbon fiber is 3500 MPa, 230 GPa, and 1750 kg m −3 , respectively [25].…”

“…For instance, Naseer and Khan 25 examined the effect of GNPs on the mechanical properties of sandwich panels under a four‐point bending load for aerospace structures. Azadi et al 26 experimentally investigated the influence of GNPs and PU foam on the compressive strength of the composite sandwich beams. They found that adding 0.3% of GNPs increases the compressive strength of the structure.…”

“…Some researchers have investigated the effects of nanoparticles on the mechanical properties and strength of composite structures. For instance, Azadi et al 10 studied the mechanical properties of hybrid sandwich beams reinforced with GNPs filled with foam. They investigated the effects of various parameters, such as the height and angle of the sandwich structure core, the volume fraction of nanoparticles, and the foam on the compressive strength of the structure.…”
