Experimental investigation of the effect of a B70 biodiesel blend on a common-rail passenger car diesel engine

Abstract: The results of engine bench tests of a 2.0l common-rail high-pressure injection passenger car diesel engine fuelled by B70 biodiesel blend are compared with the corresponding results of baseline tests with standard EN 590 diesel fuel. Engine performance and carbon monoxide (CO), total hydrocarbon (THC), and nitrogen oxide (NO x) emissions were measured. Also, indicative particulate sampling was made with a simplified undiluted exhaust sampler. The aim of this study was to understand better how the engine's ele… Show more

“…Furthermore, based on the review performed by Hoekman et al [6], the properties of B100 from sunflower oil are given as a result of averaging the values from 20 cited references. Equally, based on the formulae found in [26,27], the values of density and kinematic viscosity were calculated at´20˝C. 2.…”

“…It was supplied by ELIN Biofuels SA (Volos Greece) and conforms to EN14214-2012 [35]. The main specifications of the fuels are summarized in Table 6 [36,37]. High-percentage biodiesel blend, B70, was employed in the engine tests with the PSA DW10 ATED HDi (common-rail, high-pressure injection) engine.…”

“…Both engines are regularly employed in student laboratory exercises, and also for research and development projects of the Lab. In the case of DW10, the engine was subjected to steady-state and transient testing with the B70 fuel for a total of 100 h in the period 2008-2010 (Table 7) [36,37]. The testing time was uniformly distributed among the operation points listed in Table 8.…”

“…The work of diesel engines on the blended fuel provides for a reduction in emission with exhaust gases by 1.7-36 % by carbon oxide [12]. A transition to the mixture of diesel fuel and vegetable oil makes it possible to reduce smokiness by 12.2-42 % [13]. Indicators of «rigidity» in the work of a diesel engine on blended fuels are lower than those on the mineral fuel.…”
