Experimental investigation of the pulse width of a diode-pumped acousto-optically Q-switched Tm:YAG laser

Abstract: We study a pulsed laser-diode-pumped acousto-optically (AO) Q-switched Tm:YAG laser. To satisfy the requirements of a wind measurement lidar, we investigate experimentally the factors influencing the output-pulse width in a thermal compensating linear laser cavity. We show that the laser-pulse width is not only influenced by the pumping intensity of the diode lasers, the laser-cavity length, and the transmissivity of the output coupler, but also depends on the stimulated emission cross-section of the laser med… Show more

“…As presented, the stable ultrashort pulse generated in our work, down to 109 ns, was the narrowest among the 2-D heterojunction materials, and the peak power was also competitive. Compared with other laser resonators in Table 1 , the cavity length of the resonator we designed is only an approximate 10 mm laser [ 49 ]. In addition, we coated a special optical film on the transparent surface of the laser crystal to effectively use the pump light in the laser crystal.…”

“…The radiation emission of around 2 mm corresponds to transition from the 3 F 4 level to the 3 H 6 level for Tm. In addition, the 3 F 4 level in Tm:YAG is characterized by a long fluorescence lifetime of around 11 ms, which is attractive from the point of view of using this material in Q-switched modulators [21]. Due to showing strong absorption bands in the 785 nm range, thulium can be pumped by AlGaAs laser diodes [22].…”

“…At the same time ,it has the advantages of a high mechanical strength and a large heat conductivity (0.13 W/(cm K)), which allows high-power operation. [1][2][3][4][5][6] In recently years, international scholars had studied Tm:YAG laser. The mostly reports were about CW Tm:YAG laser, and the condition for pulse Tm:YAG laser was rare.…”

“…The single pulse energy was 1.85mJ under the repetition of 100 Hz. [2] According to the reports currently, the output energy of pulse Tm: YAG laser was still low, so there would be a large research space for it. And most of them used continuous laser diode(LD) as pump sources.…”
