Experimental investigation on mechanical performance of PVC foam‐based E‐glass isophthalic polyester composites

Somanath Ojha,
Himanshu Bisaria,
Smita Mohanty
et al.

Abstract: The present research paper investigates the chemical, thermal, mechanical, thermo‐mechanical properties, and fractography of sandwich composites made from E‐glass‐reinforced isophthalic polyester with Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) foam as a core by hand. These composites are commonly used in marine applications and manufactured by hand lay‐up method. A comparison is made between the properties of the PVC foam polyester sandwich composite with E‐glass layers on both sides (SC1) and the PVC foam isophthalic polyeste… Show more

“…The adoption of FRP composite materials in the marine industry gained prominence after World War II as an alternative to traditional timber in boat construction 38–40 . The scarcity and escalating costs of timber, coupled with the vulnerability of wooden boats to degradation from exposure to seawater, prompted a transition towards FRP composites 41,42 .…”

“…Cotton, which is a robust natural fiber obtained from plant seeds, offers a multitude of benefits when employed as reinforcement in polymer composites [5]. Due to its durability, absorbency, biodegradability, and ease of blending with other fibers, cotton is an excellent choice as a reinforcing material in polymer composites [6][7][8]. The combination of cotton fibers with epoxy resin presents a promising avenue for creating composite materials with enhanced performance and reduced environmental impact [9,10].…”
