Experimental Investigation on Surface Roughness in Electrical Discharge Turning of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy

Abstract: SummaryThis study presents a novel EDM turning process specially designed and developed to generate precise cylindrical forms on hard and difficult-to-machine materials. For this purpose, a specially designed turning spindle is used. The spindle was mounted on a conventional die-sinking EDM machine to rotate the workpiece. Axially symmetric parts can be manufactured by feeding the shaped tool into the rotating workpiece. In this way an axisymmetric workpiece can be made with small tools at both macro and micro… Show more

“…[17] investigated the effect of the process variables and WP diameter on the CWEDT process. [18,19] performed an experimental investigation on EDT of Titanium alloy, the results indicate that MRR is affected the most by peak current -I peak ‖, T on , and V. And R a has a direct proportional relationship with I peak , and T on while R a has an inverse proportional relationship with the duty factor. [20] improved a real-time energy monitoring system to improve the performance and efficiency of the WEDM process by monitoring the transient state of the process.…”

“…B MS is the sum of mean squares of the model; W MS is the sum of mean squares of the residual difference; F -value is the data for the determination of the model. The coefficient of determination 2 R of the model and the coefficient of determination 2 R (adj) after model adjustment can be found using formulas (11) and (12).…”

“…To verify the prediction model, some researchers have used the analysis of variance to verify the confidence of a model. For example, Gohil and Puri [12] created a surface roughness prediction model for the electrical discharge turning of a Ti-6Al-4V alloy where regression analysis was used to verify the confidence of the model by the analysis of variance. Davoodi and Tazehkandi [13] used a coated carbide tool to process an Inconel 738 alloy and simulated a quadratic model using the feed, thrust and cutting forces as well as surface roughness in the Response Surface Method (RSM).…”
