Experimental Investigation on the Effect of Operating Conditions on the Running-in Behavior of Lubricated Elliptical Contacts

Abstract: During running-in period, the friction coefficient and roughness profile of contacting elements experience drastic changes as a result of asperities deformation and wear. These transient changes affect the steady-state performance of mechanical elements such as gears, cam followers, and bearings. An experimental study on the effect of running-in operating conditions on the properties of a tribosystem is conducted using a pin-on-disk test rig. Curve-fit relationships are developed based on the experimental data… Show more

“…In this study, the load‐sharing concept for determining the coefficient of friction in the mixed‐lubrication regime, originally developed by Johnson et al, is briefly described. More details about the mixed‐lubrication model using the load‐sharing concept can be found elsewhere in the literature . The load‐sharing concept is based on the assumption that the total transmitted load is carried by asperity as well as the film component.…”

“…Spikes presented the basics of elastohydrodynamic lubrication and its practical applications. Previously, a number of studies have been reported to model the EHL/mixed‐EHL regime in concentrated contacts under rolling/sliding conditions . In those papers, a load‐sharing concept originally developed by Johnson et al was employed, and a variation of the friction coefficient was shown for the various experimental conditions (very high to low load, the effect of surface roughness, etc.…”

“…Researchers Ghosh and Sadeghi [181], Albers and Reichert [182], Akbarzadeh and Khonsari [183,184], and Bosman et al [185] characterized the running-in wear through a numerical approach. References [176,182,183,186] considered only roughness for characterizing the running-in wear while [184][185][186] included temperature as well in their model. However, the numerical methods are difficult to implement by the practitioner, for they require many additional material properties and much computational power to perform the necessary simulations.…”

“…Running-in tests were necessary for friction pairs. [13][14][15][16] The 30 min runningin tests were carried out for each specimen with the load of 1000 N before the test. A relatively stable friction coefficient was achieved under constant load and rotational speed.…”
