Experimental investigations of time delay distributions inside a commercial gas tube

Abstract: The results of the commercial indicator gas tube investigation, using the time delay measuring method are presented in this paper. This tube is usually used as an indicator of many electrical appliances. Time delay distributions for voltages from 75 V up to 100 V and relaxation times from 1 ms to 20 ms are presented. The time delay distributions for voltages U W > 75 V have Gaussian shape, and for U W = 75 V are multimodal. The multimodal time delay distributions indicate several different mechanisms which lea… Show more

“…time between two successive measurements without voltages on electrodes) [9,10] , glowing time, current through diode, auxiliary glow current [10] , gap between electrodes [8] , and irradiation with UV and gamma radiations [11,12] . The time delay measurement method also imparts a lot of very important information about the working of many commercial gas discharge components, for example: starters [13,14] gas indicators [15] , and gas arresters [16] .…”

“…The main deficiency of GDTs in terms of protective effects is their considerable discharge delay and unsatisfactory response sensitivity, which makes it difficult to cope with large lightning surges of wave head rising steepness. There is a follow-current problem in the lightning protection of the power supply system [16][17][18]. According to IEC61643-311, if a supply GDT creates power-frequency follow currents, it is advised that it is extinguished at the 30-phase angle once the first power-frequency current passes zero and that there be no breakdown [19][20][21].…”

“…Neon is used in many of electrical component, pure or in mixture with some other gas. For example, it is used in neon glow lamps, in indicators glow tube [13], in starters [14], in sodium-vapor lamp, and in gas arresters [15]. Beside of that, recently neon has applications in plasma panels, in mixture with a small percentage of Xe or Ar [16].…”
