The article deals with the issue of restoration and care of cultural heritage buildings in the Czech Republic. The content is focused mainly on the topic of valuation of construction works. Obtaining quality documents is very important for planning reconstruction and maintenance works on a building of cultural heritage. Proper and timely maintenance work is the key to maintaining the value of the building and increasing its viability. The tool for assessing the economic sustainability of an immovable cultural heritage is a life cycle cost analysis carried out on the basis of relevant input data on the technical parameters of the building, structural elements and equipment, the time period of the occurrence of costs related to them. The analysis becomes an important basis for decision-making by the owner, the designer and the future user on choosing the optimal variant of the technical solution for restoration, also with regard to ecological aspects, cultural and historical value and long-term economic consequences.

Influence of rivet clamping stress on fatigue crack growth behaviour

Steel structures built between 1850 and 1940 are mostly made of mild steel. Riveting was the dominating joining technique. Fatigue failure respectively fatigue safety is of major concern if these structures are cyclic loaded such as bridges and hydraulic steel structures. Considering the period of operation of almost hundred years, the determination of the remaining fatigue life is the main aim of the assessment of these structures. The clamping force of the rivets significantly influences the crack propagation. Clamping stress is caused by the shrinkage of hot driven rivets while cooling down. The clamping force and the corresponding friction at the contact surfaces reduces notch stress at the rivet hole and thus also the crack driving force. In this paper, experiments for determining the rivet prestressing as well as the friction at the contact surfaces of riveted joints are presented. For typical design details numerical models are generated to determine notch stresses for uncracked components and stress intensity factors for cracked components. Regarding to crack growth rates, only few data have been published for old mild steels so far. Thus, the research program also includes experimental investigation of crack growth parameters.

Metallographic Testing of 19th Century Steel in an Operating Water Tower

The world’s first steel structures were built towards the end of the 19th century. Some of them are still in use today, whereas others are maintained as precious technical heritage. In both cases, there may be a need to assess their technical condition and carry out repairs and reinforcements, which requires an understanding of the properties of the steel used. The few studies that have been undertaken of such steel structures indicate that the properties depend on the history of use. This paper presents the results of metallographic tests of a steel tank in a water tower built in 1884 in Lower Silesia. The chemical composition was consistent with that of the puddled steel used in the 19th century. The carbon content showed significant segregation and ranged from 0.011% to 0.072% mass. As a consequence, a typical microstructure for low-carbon steels (ferritic) was observed, changing locally to ferritic-pearlitic. The tested steel contained a very high content of phosphorus and silicon. The microstructure with numerous slags favoured the formation of surface delamination caused by the corrosion processes. The degree of corrosion of the steel of the tank was also assessed, as well as the type of corrosion inside the tank. Corrosion was favoured by the oxygen concentration cell. The results of the research will be used to assess the potential for continuing tank use and the reinforcements that have been planned. The results presented will add to the somewhat limited research results available for steel dating back to the 19th century, which is still present in many building structures. Such a database is especially needed by those designing technical measures aimed at maintaining these historical structures in good technical condition.
