Less than 10% of all plastic produced has been recycled. To counteract plastic accumulation and pollution, fast and large-scale recycling methods of multi-polymer materials, a material flow incompatible with traditional recycling methods, must be employed. Steam gasification is a promising solution, converting plastics into syngas, which can be synthesised into high-quality base chemicals and polymers. Process design and gas cleaning suitable for the lowest grade plastics allow large-scale recycling and extend the feedstock to biomass. With this, gasification promises reduced reliance on fossil feedstock and supports the transition to a bio-integrated circular carbon economy. [1]
