Experimental Osseointegration of Hydroxyapatite Granules in the Lumbar Vertebral Bodies

Abstract: To perform histological verification of osseointegration of porous bioceramic granules using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Material and Methods. The experiment was conducted in six mongrel dogs weighing 15 to 18 kg which underwent implantation of hydroxyapatite bioceramic granules in the lumbar vertebral bodies. After 6-month follow-up period specimens were examined histologically using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectrometry. Results… Show more

“…To assess the nature of osteogenesis and the direction of cell differentiation: e.g., whether it is going through the osteoblast production reviews and the formation of new bone tissue, or through the enchondral osteogenesis and the cartilage formation is also impossible by using the imaging techniques only. These processes of osteogenesis are characterized by different periods of regeneration and, undoubtedly, affect the velocity of the structural and functional recovery of the bone, which is of great practical importance [11]. The only reliable method for verifying the developing osseointegration in this case is a morphological study with a morphometric analysis of the bone-implant border but with no separating capsule [12][13][14].…”
