Experimental Research on the Behavior of the Rail Seat Section of Different Types of Prestressed Concrete Sleepers

Abstract: Nowadays, prestressed concrete sleepers are the most common type of sleepers. In different countries all over the world prestressed concrete sleepers are designed with different shapes, with different types of prestressed reinforcement and arrangements in cross-section. Additionally, different manufacturing methods and techniques are used for prestressed concrete sleepers. These railway members are stiff, durable and can withstand heavy loads. Despite that, damaged or deteriorated prestressed concrete sleepers… Show more

“…There has been increasing concern about the durability of prestressed concrete structures due to the corrosion of prestressed steel strands, especially in corrosive environments such as parking garages, bridges, marine structures, and railway sleepers [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. Steel corrosion is accelerated in these structures as a result of the influence of a chloride-rich environment (deicing salts, etc.).…”

“…The phenomenon of cracking of prestressed concrete sleepers (PSCs)' monobloc under static loading has interested several researchers. In this study, we are interested in the case raised by the following researchers (Jok ubaitis et al, 2016(Jok ubaitis et al, , 2020Abadi et al, 2019;You et al, 2019;Li et al, 2018;Koh et al, 2016;Taherinezhad et al, 2013;Esmaeili and Yousefi Mojir, 2011;Remennikov and Kaewunruen, 2008;Kaewunruen and Remennikov, 2007;Sadeghi, 2008;Alias, 2004;Xe et al, 1994). Koh et al (2016) have studied the damage mode of monobloc type PSCs under positive tests at the level of the rail seat.…”

“…The corrosive environment of such structures as marine structures, bridges, parking garages, and railway sleepers (Jokūbaitis et al, 2020b; is the main concern with regard to steel corrosion (deicing salts, etc.). Therefore, there is increasing interest in the use of FRP materials, namely, CFRP, AFRP, GFRP, and relatively new BFRP (E. as replacements for steel reinforcement.…”
