Experimental Research on the Durability of WPC Wallboard Made of Paper-Aluminum-Plastics Wastes

Abstract: Waste Paper-Al-Plastic materials including Tetrapak beverage and milk boxes are used to extrude the WPC instead of normal wood fiber material in this research. As many WPC products are applied as exterior wallboard at present, the research on the durability and flame retardancy of Wood-Plastic Composites is important. In this paper, various durability influences and flame retardancy of WPC are analyzed in the laboratory conditions. Some experimental results are presented as follow: Water absorption of WPC is i… Show more

“…In this context, according to the reduce, reuse, and recycle policy of the circular economy, , using bio-based chemicals and recycling waste plastics can address this issue. Wood–plastic composites (WPCs) are a new class of environmentally friendly and green materials, which are fabricated from recycled plastic and wood-processing wastes. WPCs possess the advantages of wood as well as plastics and are widely used as outdoor construction and building materials owing to their unique characteristics, such as good dimensional stability, corrosion resistance, favorable processability, and low maintenance costs. , However, WPCs are easily ignited with huge heat release owing to the presence of highly combustible plastics and wood flour. Considering that the primary chemical constituents of wood flour, which is a main component of WPCs, are cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, wherein the cellulose and hemicellulose contents are relatively high, it is extremely easy to burn WPCs. In addition, the high calorific value of plastics contributes to the extremely flammable characteristics of WPCs, leading to potential fire risks and hazards.…”
