Experimental Results of High-Resolution ISAR Imaging of Ground-Moving Vehicles with a Stationary FMCW Radar

Abstract: In the paper experimental results of ISAR (Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar) processing obtained with highresolution radar are presented. Targets under observation were ground moving vehicles, such as cars, trucks and tractors. The experiments were performed with a FMCW (Frequency- Modulated Continuous-Wave) radar operating at 94 GHz with almost 1 GHz of bandwidth. Due to the measurement scenario more typical for SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar), than ISAR, i.e. targets moving along straight line crossing the an… Show more

“…Radar is a possible alternative to optical cameras for vehicle sensing in traffic monitoring, perimeter security, and autonomous driving applications [ 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 ]. SAR imaging of stationary ground vehicles from airborne sensors has already been a subject of extensive investigations in the past [ 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 ].…”

“…SAR imaging of stationary ground vehicles from airborne sensors has already been a subject of extensive investigations in the past [ 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 ]. ISAR imaging of moving vehicles from a stationary ground radar has also been realized in the small-angle scenario previously [ 31 , 32 ]. Wide-angle imaging may offer better resolution and richer geometrical features.…”

“…The information obtained by the traffic surveillance radar can be uploaded to the intelligent transportation system (ITS) to help the driver choose a smooth road, thereby saving driving time. The FMCW radar has been applied in low-small-slow target detection, 1,2 car collision avoidance, 3,4 traffic monitoring, 5 high-precision measurement, 6 and imaging 7 owing to the advantages of small size, low cost, high resolution, no distance blind zone. Target parameters, such as range, velocity, direction-of-arrival (DOA), and so forth, can be measured by radar in real-time.…”
